twilit sky no. 3

artwork in progress on a table, soft pastels arrayed alongside the birch panel in progress. River the dog attends in the background.

it started with a little inspiration… my business card. Birches on Birch, an early work of mine.

next came the color selection: my big box of Japanese hand-rolled extra-soft pastels.

River supervised as i began to apply the color, blending by hand.

and then! i applied a stain: a mineral spirits wash. it got dark…

i paused here and let it hang on the horizontal… i thought strongly about calling it ‘Dark Flag’, something mysteriously dangerous and potentially loaded. when i asked a friend to engage with ‘Dark Flag’, they were intimidated and scared off, so… i flipped it 90 degrees, called it Twilit Sky No. 3, and then!

they started talkin’!
rightside up the way’s it gonna be.

the moon .. or sun .. is what makes it. suddenly we have weather in the wood grain. color discrepancies become weather phenomena.

An abstract twilight sky shifts from slate blue at the top through pale sage and peach to burnt orange and burgundy below. A faint, moonlike orb hangs low in the orange glow, just left of center. Fine vertical streaks show through the soft horizontal bands.

flags are clean; weather is messy.

Twilit Sky No. 3 reigns.

keep at it, lightworkers. i haven’t forgotten you.

a twilit sky, gradient from red to apricot to pale grey and lavender blue. an orb hangs low in the sky,
wood grain into weather phenomena
